FUNCTIONAL ORTHODONTICS

There are a variety of functional orthodontic braces. Basically, they provide a balance in the orofacial system (between the inside and surrounding muscles of the mouth) and thus help to correct jaw malpositions. The mechanism of action is based primarily on the use of the body's own muscular forces.

Regular wearing stimulates growth in the right places. For example, a large overbite can be reduced by promoting the growth of the lower jaw. This can, from a holistic point of view, positively influence the entire body posture. Functional orthodontic braces are often referred to as "gymnastics equipment" in German.

It is mainly used to stabilise the result of orthodontic treatment ("retention plates"). However, it can also be useful in cases of early milk tooth loss. In these cases, we also speak of so-called "space maintainers".

Functional orthodontic braces are used during growth and are therefore primarily suitable for growing patients, i.e. children and adolescents.

In rare cases, functional orthodontic braces can also be used as retaining braces in adult patients after orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatments.

Functional orthodontic braces treat both the upper and lower jaw. Similar to removable braces, they consist of plastic and wire elements (brackets). In some cases, a small screw is also built into the centre of the plastic base. The most common appliances are the "activator", "bionator", "feed double plates" and the "function regulator according to Frenkel".various wire elements (brackets), which serve to hold and correct the malposition of the teeth.

Active plates often have a small screw built into the centre of the plastic base. This is turned at regular intervals by the patient or parents according to appropriate instructions.

This not only corrects slight tooth misalignments, but also has a positive influence on the development of the jaw.

This type of brace is also made individually for each patient in one of our trusted laboratories. In addition to the impressions of the upper and lower jaw, an impression of the bite in its correct jaw position is required. When used on the patient, a wearing time of 16 hours is recommended. The average duration of treatment with functional orthodontic braces is 12 months. Depending on the treatment plan, they can also be worn during the growth and changing of teeth, for example, to correct a deep bite.
The treatment options with functional orthodontic braces are wide-ranging. The right time is crucial. These braces can only show their full effect if there is sufficient growth.
